WOLFRAM CHRIST

Wolfram Christ’s name is closely associated with an intensive and successful engagement with music-making at its highest level. As one of few violists with an international reputation as a soloist, he first turned to conducting nearly 20 years ago. While artistic director at the Sydney Conservatory of Music (1995 – 2000), Wolfram Christ gained his first experiences of conducting working with the chamber and symphony orchestras in Sydney as well as on concert tours to China, South America, South Africa and Germany.

Guest appearances followed with the Durban Philharmonic Orchestra in South Africa and the Meiningen theatre orchestra in Germany. From 2004 to 2008 Christ was engaged as chief conductor of the Palatinate Chamber Orchestra, Mannheim. The Frankfurter Rundschau, a leading German Newspaper, attributed the rejuvenation of the orchestra to him. It is noteworthy that during Christ’s chief conductorship internationally renowned soloists such as the clarinettist Sabine Meyer, the flautist Emanuel Pahud, the oboist Albrecht Mayer, the violinist Renaud Capuçon, the cellist Daniel Müller-Schott and the pianist Martin Stadtfeld all made appearances with the orchestra.

Christ has been invited several times to conduct the Símon Bólivar Orchestra, in Caracas where Maestro Abreu, the orchestra’s legendary founder, named him the „string doctor“.

Among other recent engagements Christ has conducted Royal Danish Orchestra in Copenhagen, the German Radio Philharmonic in Saarbrücken, the Göttingen Symphony the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, New Zealand, the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, the Basque National Orchestra in San Sebastian, the Orchestra Mozart di Bologna, the Camerata Madrid and the Chamber Orchestras in Munich, Pforzheim and Basel.

Wolfram Christ has been principal guest conductor of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra since September 2009. Beside concerts in Germany and abroad, he has conducted the orchestra at the internationally renowned festivals in Lucerne and Schleswig-Holstein. Among concerts planned in 2012 there will be appearances with the pianist Hélène Grimaud.

Following many years as principal violist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Christ has been viola professor at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg since 1999.
